Onion Rings and the Engine-less Man

So, tonight we were reminded of an experience... a few weeks ago, we decided to go try out this little hamburger and fries stand down by center street in provo. It's called Tommy's Burgers... or something like that. We were sitting outside and just enjoying our chicken burger, fries, and onion rings. We were talking about how good the onion rings were and how we had been wanting to eat onion rings for quite some time. Well, up walked this man. He informed us that his engine had dropped out of his car. I didn't really know that was possible. I guess it is. He needed some cash to catch the bus back to salt lake (i think.) So, as Chip was digging in his wallet trying to find some money so we could help this man out, I offered this man an onion ring. He accepted. Chip handed the man some money and the man said thank you. Well, the man must have noticed, just as we had that the onion rings were awefully tasty because right as he was leaving he asked, pointing to the onion rings, "could i have the rest of those?" We said sure and handed him the little paper dish. He began walking away as he shoved an onion ring in his mouth. we tried offering him the onion ring sauce, but he just laughed at us and as we said good night or whatever, he looked at us and smiled a big onion ringy smile. It was a pretty funny moment!

Becky and Chip,
Not to put a damper on your experience but when I was living in Salt lake I was constantly having people tell similar stories about running out of gas or their car breaking and needing money to get home. Usually to Utah county. I gave money a few times and then I heard a police officer say this is a scam. He said to offer to call a police officer because if they are in real need the officer can help arrange for a ride home.
Ok this could just be my paranoid single self hating when strange men ask me for money but just be careful.

I have to agree with mandy, as I read this , that is the first thing I thought of. its a scam. But Tim and I view it as, we do our part and help them if we feel that we should and what they do with the money is between them and Jesus :)
You never will look at onion rings the same though. You guys are awesome! I sure miss ya.

I actually thought the same thing. Here in SLC we have people like that all over. You'll have to remind me to tell you a funny story when we were at smith's. Usually they don't want your food though....just the money so they can buy some beer or cigarettes. But it was very nice of you guys to help. But it is all a scam...they actually make TONS of money doing this. Like Mandy said call a police officer to help them.

Hi Becky, it's your cousin Daisy! Don't feel bad for being nice, even if it was a scam. Those onion rings really do look delicious. I can taste them now . . .

The Smith's on 4th in Salt Lake is like the Bermuda Triangle for "broken down cars" or "run out of gas" stories. Once Nic gave a guy some money and he gave some back and said "No pennies." Silly bums...I just started buying small gift cards to fast food places (so they can't return them for cash-food only.) Which would have been perfect for your guy since he loved onion rings so much! I'm so glad you guys have a blog!!!

Cutest story. Do you know if windy and Ryan are linked to your blog. i guess they go around trying to find out where I leave comments. I used to never really get on anyones except mandy and brielles and windy's as I didn't know really much about them. So then I linked into Rene and anthony's and boy you havent seen dancing until you see John and I dance. I will e-mail it to you. I hope you kids are ok. It sounds and looks like you found the right place to eat>!
I love you
Donna

Great story - it never hurts to help people out. If it was a scam, karma will catch him sooner or later!
